Flora-Aurora is turning one in 2 months time…
She’s growing up way too fast!
Writing this post makes me automatically reminisce about the time when I wrote my post about the story behind choosing Flora-Aurora’s name and designing her Birth announcement, which seems so long ago now but on the other hand it also feels like time has flown by SO quickly as Flora is already turning 1 this August!
I remember like yesterday when I held her in my arms for the very first time and fell in love but from then to now so much has happened and life has been so extremely busy, which sometimes makes it feel like a lifetime ago as well. Also, our little smarty pants baby has always looked more like a tiny toddler rather than a newborn baby, with her long locks, her giant cheek to cheek (almost) 24/7 smile and hilarious ways of interacting with us, which I love so much about her because it makes her so HER but also breaks my mother heart a little because it feels like she kind of skipped that baby phase sometimes…and now she’s already turning one, ONE…ONE! Only 2 months left and baby is officially an one year old!
We are so proud of our little Flora, she’s the perfect mix of the both of us and she has completed our little family in every way possible. I know, it sounds like bragging when saying this about your own child but really Flora is such a sweetheart, sure she can be a brat and a miss sassy pants too, the girl clearly knows what she wants and NOT wants already and she’s definitely a hand full, but she’s also the biggest sweetheart I know. Always in for snuggles and cuddles, kisses in overload, smiles almost the entire day, so extremely easygoing, shares all her toys and waves and greets everyone we’re passing by when we’re out, even if they don’t do it back. She has a special soul!
Ever since she’s here, she has actually made my job as an illustrator and designer even more fun as well, she adds to my sources of inspirations and inspires me to be even more creative and take on DIY projects, her funny character (which often reminds us of the little character of Despicable me‘s Agnes “it’s SOOOO fluffaaaay” ) even brings new ideas and inspirations. Who knows, maybe I’ll make her the face of an entire new illustration series in the nearby future. That being said, when it comes to her own events, her birth to start with, I wanted her to have the most creative and original designs, specially created for her, as well. Creations that would also be sweet memories to put in her photo albums or hang in her room.
Flora; The goddess of plants, flowers and fertility in Roman mythology.
Aurora; The Roman goddess of the Dawn.
Both also characters from Disney’s 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty”; Flora is one of the three fairy godmothers of princess Aurora, dressed in a red gown (although she’s obsessed with the color pink) She is the strongest-willed leader of the group. Her gift to Aurora is the gift of beauty.- Aurora is the princess, aka Sleeping Beauty and was named after the Roman goddess of Dawn by her parents because she fills their life with sunshine (which couldn’t be a more perfect reason for us to choose that name too)
Here you can see what her Birth announcement looked like, which was inspired by Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. Her 1st Birthday invites are kind of like a sequel to her Birth Announcement and are portraying Sleeping Beauty’s fairy Flora and princess Aurora. While her Birth Announcement was created in a more classic and elegant silhouette style because I found that more fitting for a Birth announcement, her 1st Birthday invites are created in my own take on chibi style.
What is Chibi style?
Chibi is a Japanse slang word and means “short person” or “small person”. The word has gained currency among fans of manga and anime. It can be translated as “little” but it’s used in a more cute way. The term chibi has mostly been conflated with the “super deformed” style of drawing characters with oversized heads or it can be used to describe child versions of characters.
I’ve been working with my own take on the Chibi style within my own art work and illustrations for quite some years now, while it’s not the only style I practice, it is definitely one of my favorites. Especially when it comes to my more fairy tale-like characters, I love to turn them into chibis. Chibi’s often are colorful and happy looking, perfect for my giggling baby’s 1st Birthday invites, I thought.
A Fairy tale Design
For this design, I’ve turned fairy Flora and princess Aurora in a chibi character and also adjusted their hair color to the real Flora-Aurora’s hair color. I’ve designed them on my new Wacom Cintiq Companion, which has been such a blessing to have for a designer!
Once I’ve created all the designs, the hardest part came, which was turning all the elements into one whole. To have it not only match in theme but also still sort of match in the overall look with her Birth announcement, I’ve, once again, choose to use craft paper. I just love the look of my illustrations on craft paper, they also are some of my best sellers for my greeting cards and invites I sell through my clients.
I’ve played a few days with the lettering and where to place the elements and eventually it just turned out exactly how we wished for it to be and while I am a real perfectionist and hardly ever am a full 100% satisfied with my designs, I AM with this one! I am so proud of it and I hope Flora is too when she’s older and sees them in her baby albums.
I’ve had her invites printed at one of the shops my client owns, I currently work for a few of their shops (including this one) as a freelance designer but have VERY EXCITING news to share in another upcoming post. Anyways their cards are super high quality and when ordering there, your order will arrive like this.
A Royal Invitation
We are throwing Flora a Fairy tale Garden Tea Party (Sleeping Beauty themed cakes and all), so a royal invitation for her guests was only appropriate. But when you are named after a goddess, a fairy AND a princess the whole package needs to go in style right!?
So this royal fairy princess even got her very own postage stamps printed for her and oh my, they turned out so amazing! I’ve used one of our favorite pictures of her combined with my design of the chibi fairy Flora. As we used all of the stamps for her invites minus one, I might just re-order an extra set of 10 to put in her photo album, we just love the stamps that much!
The rest of the package needed to match the fairy tale-like style as well and so I went for glittery gold envelopes, decorated them with Sleeping Beauty stickers and wrote the names and addresses with white fine liner. Marlo sealed the envelopes with the same heart shaped wax stamps like we also did for Flora’s birth announcement envelopes, only we used a red pink wax this time to match the colors of the invite.
To add one more extra (not shown in the pictures) we’ve thrown in some glittery confetti to surprise…or annoy…the receivers with.
When her invites were finally all ready to send out, I took little fairy princess to the postal office so she could post them herself. Afterwards she also got to play with the left over confetti which I’ve used to photograph the invites with (before I had Marlo vacuum the whole living room – the things this poor guy has to deal with being married to a creative artist)
Flora and I brought the invites to the postal office on Friday and Saturday late morning the first super excited reactions of her guests started to come in who all absolutely loved the card and the stamp, which made me so proud!
When the guests opened up their envelopes they immediately were greeted by a little fairy Flora, how cute!
Well after all this fairy tale themed fun and creativity, we are already excited for Flora’s party and to share this amazing milestone with our loved ones, expect a blog post about it afterwards! But first up is our magical getaway and Flora’s first Disneyland resort vacation, expect a post about that too!
Stay Kawaii & Wish Flora a Royal 1st Birthday
